♨️ Onsen and Public Bath Etiquette

♨️ Onsen and Public Bath Etiquette

To ensure a pleasant experience for everyone, please follow these basic rules when visiting Japanese hot springs (onsen) and public baths (sentō):

🧼 1. Wash before entering the bath
Always shower and wash your body thoroughly at the washing area before entering the shared bath.
💡 Do not use soap or shampoo inside the main tub.

👙 2. Enter the bath naked
Wearing swimsuits or underwear is not allowed in Japanese onsen or sentō.
Use the small towel only to cover yourself while walking, but keep it out of the water.

🧖‍♀️ 3. Keep your towel out of the bath
Place your small towel on the edge of the bath or on your head, but never soak it in the water.

💬 4. Stay quiet and relax
Avoid loud talking, splashing, or swimming.
Onsen are meant for relaxation and mindfulness.

📵 5. No phones or cameras inside
Photography is strictly prohibited in bathing areas for privacy reasons.

💧 6. Tie up long hair
If you have long hair, tie it up to keep it out of the bath water.

🚫 7. Respect tattoo policies
Some facilities still restrict visible tattoos, while others (like the ones listed above) welcome tattooed guests.
If unsure, check at reception or use a waterproof cover sticker.

🥤 8. Stay hydrated
After bathing, drink water or tea to rehydrate your body.
Many facilities have vending machines or rest areas for this purpose.

🩴 9. Use slippers in designated areas
Wear slippers only where provided, and remove them before entering the changing or bathing area.

🙏 10. Be considerate
Respect others’ personal space and follow staff instructions — Japanese baths value cleanliness, silence, and harmony.
If unsure, check at reception or use a waterproof cover sticker.
